The SOFTCOIL system uses gas pressure from the fired cartridge, directed through a port in the barrel to slow down and delay the slide’s rearward movement. A piston within a cylinder under the barrel counteracts the slide’s rearward motion until the gas pressure decreases after firing. This mechanism allows for smooth slide operation, including breech opening and cartridge ejection.
